To provide medical care to the population that requires it, the Dental Clinic of the Popular Autonomous University of the State of Puebla (UPAEP) integrated and put into operation a biosafety manual and reinforced the protocols that they already carried out. In the last two semesters, it treated more than 10,000 patients, 5,366 from July to December and 4,752 in which it just concluded.
This was highlighted by the director of the Faculty of Dentistry of the aforementioned university, Prof. CDEEP Ruth Aguilera Rocha, during the press conference “Dental Services for patients in times of pandemic ”.
He indicated that the cleaning and disinfection measures that are now applied in shops and homes were a normal and common practice in the stomatology offices and clinics since before the health contingency, which forced them to rethink these strategies and reinforce them.
“We had to reassign tasks, review protocols, and run things in a slightly more systematic way.”
He mentioned that although they closed in March of the previous year, “we did not remain seated”, since they took on the task of integrating and reinforcing the biosafety manuals. With adjustments to the times of pandemic taking into account international protocols and for more than a year we began to rehearse and train both students and teachers to avoid contagion ”.
He added that they performed as many repetitions as required until everything was well established, “we also conducted an exam for our teachers and students so that they could measure themselves and know the standard; We did this a year ago ”.
Currently with these measures and these precautions they have returned to clinical work providing services in the UPAEP clinic both routine and emergency.
For her part, the coordinator of the Clinic of Dentistry, Undergraduate and Postgraduate in Dentistry of the UPAEP, Gabriela Cordero Parraguirre, explained that in July 2020 with 12 volunteer students they treated 383 patients.
“In August, 75 students from the three postgraduate courses joined, including pedodontics and orthodontics. In December we had 5,366 patients treated. In October and November students from the last semesters of the degree joined ”.
Told that 80 units and collection mechanisms were adapted, as well as the windows, accesses, ventilation and the coordination of the use of the facilities were taken care of. In addition, virtual laboratories were launched.
He added that in spring, the operation of 802 patients was covered, specifically in March; and in May undergraduate students joined, which allowed them to attend 4,752 patients in total in the last school term.
