The secretary general of the organization in the Region regrets that the regional government has not made a minimum effort to complement the state measures
The Union of Small Farmers (UPA) of the Region of Murcia maintained that “the increase in prices paid by consumers for food products and that are reflected in the evolution of the CPI have not meant more income for farmers and ranchers”, due to the «strong increase in costs» and «drops in production due to the weather». That is the assessment of the organization’s agricultural year, which affected the “general rise in costs borne by farmers and ranchers.
“Even recognizing that the measures adopted by the Government of Spain have partially cushioned the costs of electricity and fuel, the prices paid today by farmers and ranchers are notably higher, up to double for agricultural diesel and triple for electricity” declared Marcos Alarcón, general secretary of UPA.
“Recognizing the budgetary effort made by the Government of Spain to grant direct aid, aimed primarily at the livestock sectors, does not prevent us from pointing out that in most cases they have only served to compensate for the extra cost of feed for a month,” said Marcos Alarcón , who regretted that the Regional Government has not made a minimum effort to complement the state measures or support the sectors not included in them.
UPA-Murcia celebrated the fact that this year the availability of water, “conditional though by its high cost, has not been a limiting factor for agricultural activity”, but underlined “the uncertainty that already looms so much for irrigation dependent on the Transfer as well as the Segura Basin due to the effects of the current drought period».
