The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) provided an estimate of the number of Russian soldiers who would have died on Ukrainian territory since the beginning of the invasion of that country on February 24.
NATO estimated that the Russian army’s losses would be much higher than what the Kremlin has acknowledged to date.
According to ‘France 24’, the latest report delivered by the Russian Government, published on March 2, spoke of 498 losses in the middle of the fighting in the so-called ‘special military operation’.
However, this Wednesday the Organization indicated that the number of losses is significantly higher.
According to data provided by a NATO official to the ‘Wall Street Journal’, to date, Russia has lost a fifth of the military forces it has sent to Ukraine for a month.

The report indicates that the number of deaths in the clashes is between 7,000 and 15,000 Russian soldiers.
But the loss picture appears to be even more complicated for the Kremlin. ‘Wall Street Journal’ notes that at least 40,000 Russian soldiers have disappeared, been injured or have been taken prisoner in Ukraine.
The data, according to NATO, comes from reports provided by Ukraine, leaks from Russian balance sheets and data compiled in 4 weeks by international intelligence services.
The calculation of the total number of soldiers wounded, taken hostage or missing, on the other hand, comes from statistical averages of the Alliance that indicate that, for every fatality in a conflict, three other soldiers are wounded.

The picture is complicated for Russia. According to the newspaper ‘Times’, the four weeks of conflict in Ukraine would have cost Russia similar losses to those it incurred in the 10-year occupation of Afghanistan between 1979 and 1989.
15,000 dead soldiers was the balance of Russian casualties in 10 years in Afghanistan, losses left by the invasion of Ukraine in just one month.
According to international media, Russia began its invasion of Ukraine on February 24 with a total of 190,000 soldiers. Later, he incorporated attackers from territories such as Syria or Chechnya, whom he described as volunteers who joined the war.

On the Ukrainian side, there is also no updated data on the soldiers killed in the clashes. The latest report by President Volodimir Zelensky spoke of at least 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers killed on the front lines.

As for the civilians affected by the invasion, the UN and international organizations estimate that there are more than 700 fatalities and 3.4 million refugees, which constitutes the largest exodus of people since the Second World War.
Although the figures are difficult to verify due to the situation on the ground, the truth is that the losses and the Ukrainian resistance have hindered the advance of the Russian troops in the territory.
The sanctions have also somewhat weakened the force with which Russia sought to even reach kyiv, the country’s capital.
