The authorities of the town of Mildura in the state of Victoria, in Australia, unveiled this Friday, the mystery behind a strange pink light that illuminated the night sky of the town, last Tuesday night and that generated various hypotheses among the inhabitants. . Aliens, solar flares and even the end of the world were some of them.
Tammy Szumowski, a local woman who was interviewed by the BBC, said that what crossed her mind was that maybe the apocalypse had arrived, as she answered questions from her children.
“I was just acting like a calm, relaxed mother, telling the children: ‘There is nothing to worry about… But in my head I was thinking, what the hell is that?’ .
Other interviewees expressed that they believed that perhaps the world was ending. Nikea Champion, a local resident, initially did not realize that the light was coming from below, so she thought it was a very bright red moon.
“All the scenarios of the end of the world were going through my head… I was having a great moment of ‘Stranger Things,'” he said, referring to one of the villains of the famous Netflix series.
#Mildura and surrounds were treated to a spectacular sight tonight when a red light appeared in the sky.
Was it aliens?
an aurora?
No, it appears to have been the hydroponic lights from a medicinal cannabis farm reflecting off cloud which is somehow the most Mildura answer ever. pic.twitter.com/Wfy63tRrng— Sarah Tomlinson (@sarah_tomlinson) July 19, 2022
Secret marijuana crops
None of the conclusions of the locals came close to the reality of what had generated the phenomenon, but the mystery was unveiled by Peter Crock, CEO of Cann Group, a company that grows medical cannabis.
In Australia, medical cannabis has been legal since 2016, but the cultivation facilities are kept secret for security reasons, these farms use reddish-colored lights to help the plants grow.
According to Crock, crops need 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness.which traditionally go from 7 in the morning to 7 in the afternoon, in this case, due to the start-up of a new area, they leave the lights on, but these are not observed at night because the facilities have a system of blinds to prevent light from coming out at night.
“Normally the blinds automatically close at sunset, but last night we had the lights on and the blinds hadn’t closed yet, so there was a period where it created a glare,” Crock said.
At the explanations, the citizens were disappointed “I laughed out loud… it could have been something much cooler, but basically it was just medical marijuana grow lights,” said Ms. Champion.
Around 260,000 prescriptions have been created with medical cannabis to treat patients with anxiety, chronic pain, sleep disorders, among other diseases.
In the world more and more countries legalize its use, such as France, Belgium, Ireland and New Zealand, while in the United States 38 states allow the use of medical marijuana.
In Australia its recreational consumption is prohibited throughout the country.
