Removing elements from a photo is nothing new. There we have the case of the famous photos of Trotsky deleted in images in which he appeared with Lenin or Stalin. Although we could even go to the beginnings of photography, in the 19th century, to find cases of elements removed or added to an image. But it was after Photoshop, in 1990, when the number of photos in which elements were removed increased exponentially.
The clone stamp tool, present in the first version of the program launched in 1990, changed the history of photography. Thanks to it it became relatively easy to remove objects.
One of the most famous cases are the photos of Lenin or Stalin in which Trotsky was eliminated
The recently released iPhone 16 has Apple Intelligence – at the moment, not in the EU –, the company’s artificial intelligence technology. Among the tools they incorporate is the automatic deletion of objects and people.
AI tools that allow you to remove elements from a photo have been around for some time. The paid version of Google Photos, or the one included in Pixel phones, are good examples of this.
It is true that there are many artificial intelligence tools that promise miracles. However, when push comes to shove, many offer impressive results at first glance, but mediocre when we look at the result in detail. The same thing happens with tools that allow you to eliminate objects from a photo using artificial intelligence.
The Google Photos magic eraser tool can get it right if we delete a small area of an image, but it generally offers results that leave a lot to be desired if we want to obtain very realistic images.
For its part, Firefly, Adobe’s artificial intelligence engine, is an AI image processing tool that really works.
Google Photos Magic Eraser allows you to delete elements very efficiently if the background is not very complex. For example, a person on a smooth wall or with a little complex structure. To use it you need to have a Google Pixel phone with the application, or opt for a Google One storage plan. This application, when analyzing an image, can detect objects that we can ask it to delete automatically, although that does not mean that the result is always good.
The Canva app with the magic eraser feature can be used on a computer with the browser, or through an app for phones and tablets. Its price is 12 euros per month, but it comes with a huge number of integrated AI tools.
The tool that stands out above Google Photos is Lightroom. The results in most cases are good, as it preserves the texture of the area in which we work. The option is currently available in both the computer and phone applications.
One of the strong points of Lightroom’s AI eraser is that it offers three versions of the corrected area and you can choose the one that is most convincing to you.
Lightroom uses generative AI features, so a subscription to the Lightroom mobile or desktop app is required. Adobe has already said that images using this feature will appear marked as AI-generated with Content Credentials technology. So, if we drastically alter a photo, it will be better to warn about it.
