Nutritionist Kerrison called brittle hair a symptom of intestinal diseases
Brittle hair and nails can be a symptom of bowel disease, said nutritionist Lucy Kerrison. She and her colleagues commented for The Sun called non-obvious symptoms of intestinal problems that can lead to cancer.
Kerrison named brittle hair, nails and skin problems as one of the first signs of possible intestinal problems. Her colleague, nutritionist Kirsten Jackson, added that frequent bone fractures could also indicate inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or celiac disease.
IBD includes ulcerative colitis, which affects the colon, and Crohn’s disease, which can affect any part of the digestive system.
Frequent trips to the toilet can also indicate problems. “People assume that if they have a bowel movement every day, they are not constipated. The truth is, a healthy bowel movement schedule is different for everyone. It depends on the diet. However, if there is a sudden change in your typical toilet routine, it is worth contacting your doctor,” she added.
Jackson named other signs of intestinal diseases as bad mood, constant fatigue, lack of energy and frequent colds, in which the cough does not go away for a long time. “The gut is 70 percent responsible for the immune system,” she explained.
