Tampereen at its meeting on Monday, December 20, the university board decided to reduce the university’s facilities on the basis of the board’s own new option. The government decided to abandon the Pinni A building on the university’s central campus, the Festia campus on the Hervanta campus and to compact the premises in the Arvo 1 building on the Kauppi campus by 2025.

“University facilities are used by faculties for teaching and research. The best options for these are now being sought. More detailed design looks at what concrete solutions might be from the users ’perspective,” says Walls.

University at the previous board meeting on november 12, the board was recommended a space reduction option in which the university’s main library building in the castle would be abandoned by 2030. The students staged protests against the abandonment of the Castle and the conquest of the Castle, and strongly condemned the plan.

At its November meeting, the Board returned the preparation of the space action plan to the preparation, emphasizing the importance of consulting the university community and dividing the action plan into two parts. The first extends to 2025 and the latter to 2026-2030. The government set a savings target of EUR 5 million for the first part of the program. The government also identified at the time a new option for the first part of the space program, which it decided to implement at Monday’s meeting.

Does the new government option touch on the Castle?

“It doesn’t touch. Now we are really starting to work together with the faculties and, of course, the students on the perspective for 2026–2030, ie as forward-looking as possible, so that we also have a working perspective for 2030 from the faculty’s point of view, ”Walls replies.
