Now Kellogg’s has decided to replace its striking employees permanently by hiring new ones.
Especially The Kellogg Company, known as Kellogg’s, is plunged into a protracted industrial action in the United States.
Workers at Kellogg’s cereal mills have been on strike since early October. Workers at factories in Michigan, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Tennessee have been involved in the strike.
Now, some 1,400 striking workers have rejected their employer’s latest contract proposal, which would offer a 3 per cent pay rise.
As a result of the rejection, the strike continues. On Tuesday, Kellogg’s announced it would be replacing striking workers on a permanent basis with new ones.
For months the reason for the continued strike is the working conditions at Kellogg’s factories. The Guardian according to factory workers have worked up to 80 hours a week during a corona pandemic.
According to an employee involved in the strike interviewed by the magazine, the factories work seven days a week, 16 hours a day. At worst, the work tube can last for more than 100 days, followed by a three-day break during which the plant equipment is cleaned.
“They [Kellogg’s] treat us less than their machines, ”he said Trevor Bidelman The Guardian on strike in early October.
Kellogg’s factory workers feel according to news agency Reuters that they kept the company’s U.S. cereal production afloat alone during the pandemic. Based on that, they feel they are earning a much higher increase in pay than three percent.
In addition to working conditions, workers are protesting against the planned cuts, as well as a practice that would give new workers significantly less pay and narrower occupational health than workers who have been in the company for longer.
Kellogg’s U.S. management justifies the replacement of striking workers by ensuring continued production and an obligation to customers.
