United States Senators unveiled a list of measures to tighten gun laws in the United States

President Biden considers the listing to be good but insufficient. Among other things, more detailed background checks on arms buyers under the age of 21 are proposed as a measure.

Stateside a group of senators from both parties unveiled a list of measures aimed at curbing the country’s armed violence.

“We are unveiling a common-sense, cross-party proposal to protect American children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across the country,” the statement, signed by 20 lawmakers, declares.

Among other things, the measures propose more detailed background checks on arms purchasers under the age of 21, curbing the illicit arms trade, and allocating additional resources to states to better prevent people from endangering their weapons to themselves or others.

The aim is to invest in, for example, mental health services and school safety.

The list is significantly more modest than that of a Democratic president Joe Biden tightening of arms laws required in early June. For example, he called for a ban on privately owned assault weapons and large magazines. According to the president, the age limit for those who buy a gun should also be raised from 18 to 21.

President Biden praised the senators’ proposals for “important steps,” and hoped the law would move forward quickly. However, he pointed out that the proposals are far from the most radical changes demanded by the president.

“They don’t solve everything I think is necessary yet, but they are steps in the right direction,” Biden said in a statement.

He went on to say that the bill would be the most significant gun bill passed by Congress in decades.

“Because the proposal is supported by both parties, there are no excuses for the delays, and there is no reason why the bill should not move forward quickly in the Senate and the White House,” Biden insisted.

Thousands of protesters across the United States gathered on Saturday to demand stricter gun laws.

Gun laws have risen to the wall due to recent mass shootings. In May, 19 children and two teachers were killed in a school shooting in the state of Texas. Earlier that month, ten black people were killed in a shooting at a store in New York State.
