The case is politically very important, as Trump is practically the only option for the Republican presidential candidate in the presidential elections to be held later this year. The Supreme Court's decision to take up the issue of immunity from prosecution has been considered a victory for Trump, as it postpones the actual trial of the attempt to overturn the election result closer to the November presidential election and perhaps even beyond it.
Institute of Foreign Policy in the webinar visiting professor of law at Washington State University earlier this week and former Supreme Court clerk Elizabeth Porter estimates that the court is unwilling to take a position that would affect the presidential election process to the clear benefit of either party. According to him, the final decision may therefore not be either confirming Trump's full immunity from prosecution or completely scrapping it, but something in between.
However, each passing week makes it increasingly unlikely that Trump would be convicted before the nomination or the presidential election, Porter said. And after that, it is not known how the legal process may or may not progress.
“These are all open questions because we've never faced them before,” Porter said.

It is known that Trump would have liked to be present at the hearing himself. However, that is not possible because the judge of another trial against Trump in New York has ordered Trump to be present at that trial on Thursday.
