House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to send the article of impeachment against Donald Trump to the Senate on Monday, kicking off the former president’s trial on one count of incitement to insurrection over the deadly unrest on Capitol Hill.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced the program on Friday.
“There will be a trial,” said Schumer, breaking down Republicans’ requests in the Senate to postpone the trial until mid-February to allow the former president to prepare his defense.
Trump is the first president to be indicted twice and the first to face trial after leaving office.
The House of Representatives indicted Trump last week for inciting the deadly January 6 Capitol riots by Trump supporters.
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell proposes delaying the start of Donald Trump’s impeachment until February to give the former president time to prepare and review his case.
