According to NWS (National Weather Service), the United States is experiencing the heaviest snowfall ever recorded in the country. According to the agency, the gusts of ice in New Hampshire, a state in the north of the country, produced the Thermal sensation -78 °C on Friday (3.Feb.2023).
Residents from Manitoba, Canada, to the US state of Maine are being told to limit their time outdoors during the weekend due to the cold snap. Meteorological authorities warn that burns and skin irritations and loss of sensitivity in unprotected areas can manifest in less than 10 minutes of exposure.
The drop in temperatures is attributed to an arctic front stretching from the Canadian maritime provinces to the central United States. Meteorologists predict that temperatures will stabilize by the end of the weekend.
Public schools in some northern states were closed due to the bitter cold. In New York City, which can register temperatures as low as -23°C, authorities have declared an emergency in order to allow homeless people to stay in shelters without the need for prior registration.
The states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio, located in the central region of the country, also registered low temperatures during the week.
In Texas, a southern state in the United States, more than 400,000 residents were left without power on Thursday (Feb 2) due to the damage caused by the blizzard. The most impacted city is the capital Austin, which has almost 1 million inhabitants. Power outages have affected around 30% of residents since Wednesday (Feb 1).
The State of California, known for sunny days and high temperatures, also registered Frost. Cities in the south of the state recorded snowfall on Monday (30.jan). In Los Angeles, the mountains were covered by about four feet.
