United States|An American man made thousands of euros after cloning a rare species of sheep.
American rancher sentenced to six months in prison after illegally cloning sheep, The Washington Post news.
The events began in 2012, when the now 81-year-old cattle breeder paid his son to find one of the world’s largest species of sheep. For this, the boy had to travel to Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan.
The court documents show that after getting possession of the sheep’s parts, the man used them to breed an even bigger hybrid species. After this, the man sold the animals he created to hunters.
The man pleaded guilty to two crimes in March. Both criminal charges related to violations of the Lacey Act. Among other things, the law prohibits the interstate trade of mislabeled animals and the sale of certain animals to states where it is illegal to own them.
In addition to the six-month prison sentence, the man has to pay a fine of more than 18,000 euros and donate money of more than 3,620 euros to a foundation that protects wild animals and their habitats.
Deputy Director of Law Enforcement, United States Fish and Wildlife Service Edward Grace said that with his actions the man took the risk of bringing diseases into the country. According to Grace, the man also endangered the genetic integrity of wild sheep populations.
Man raised and sold mountain sheep and goats and other similar species on his farm in Montana. He paid for his son several trips to Kyrgyzstan in 2012 and 2013.
In January 2013, the boy brought back a rare and large Marcopolo sheep tissue from his trip, but according to court documents, he did not import it into the United States.
In 2014, a man petitioned the state of Montana for the state to allow the Marcopolo sheep, but the petition was denied. The authorities cited the possible spread of diseases and the risk of the species becoming wild populations.
In 2015, however, a man cloned 165 embryos of the species. In May 2017, he raised a representative male sheep of the species. The documents show that the man made at least 21,000 euros with his cloned sheep.
