Amid a new wave of contagions by covid-19 in the country, caused by the omicron variant of the coronavirus, the Banking and Finance Workers Union of São Paulo, Osasco and Region reported having detected, this week alone, more than 500 cases of the disease between banking. The organization represents around 140,000 employees in the sector in the capital of São Paulo and in 16 cities in the metropolitan region.
According to the entity, agencies in the region have been closed due to lack of employees, and with the worsening of the situation, a meeting with the National Federation of Banks (Fenaban), the sector entity responsible for labor issues, on the 18th.
The sector has followed, since the beginning of the pandemic, a protocol that includes the closing of branches for cleaning if there are diagnoses of covid among employees. According to the union, these closures last 12 hours, but in some cases, the growth in the number of cases of covid among employees has prevented the reopening. Yesterday, the entity estimated that 150 branches in the capital of São Paulo, Osasco and the region had been closed in the previous seven days.

In a note, the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban) informs that banks have ensured the conditions for work in bank branches to maintain the safety of employees and customers. According to the Federation, there has been no relaxation of the protocols, adopted since the beginning of the pandemic, and the closing of agencies for cleaning can last from a few hours to a day, depending on the size of the agencies.
“Febraban emphasizes that banks maintain strict health measures, and the statement by unions that there was relaxation in the protocols adopted and that, as a result, cases of contamination increased”, adds the entity.
