SAO PAULO (Reuters) – The São Paulo Doctors Union (Simesp) announced in the early hours of Friday a strike by professionals who work in primary health care in the public network of the city of São Paulo next Wednesday, the 19th. January, amid a surge in Covid-19 cases caused by the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus.
The category claims that doctors are suffering from exhaustion in the face of the outbreak of Covid and the removal of colleagues contaminated by the virus, and they want the city hall to immediately hire more teams to care for flu syndromes, release professionals from attending the units for the purposes of week and holidays and guarantee minimum working conditions.
The decision for the stoppage was taken by the category in an assembly with the presence of 150 professionals held on Thursday.
“They ask the city of São Paulo and the Municipal Health Department for a meeting with Simesp, a response to the restructuring of the missing teams and a plan to replace the professionals on leave, with a deadline until January 17. In this way, they will be able to reassess the maintenance of the strike on the 19th”, said the union in a note.
When contacted, the Municipal Health Department of São Paulo did not immediately respond to the announcement of the stoppage.
