UNICEF: 100 million children more in poverty due to pandemic
An estimated 100 million more children are living in poverty due to the corona crisis. That appears from a report of the United Nations Organization for the Rights of the Child, UNICEF, which appeared on Thursday. The organization says it has never seen a crisis in its 75th anniversary that hit children worldwide as hard as the pandemic.
The research compared figures from the spring of 2021 with those of 2019. The number of children in poverty has increased by 10 percent in that period. According to UNICEF, “even in the best-case scenario” it will take seven to eight years for the number of children in poverty to return to the level it was in 2019.
UNICEF Netherlands director Suzanne Laszlo says “the most marginalized and vulnerable children” are hit the hardest. According to the report, the global financial gap is growing: As richer countries recover, coronavirus poverty is widening in low-income and least developed countries.
