Unicef Netherlands and 59 other organizations call for schools to reopen
Put the interests of children first and open the schools immediately after the Christmas holidays (January 10). Unicef Netherlands and 59 other organizations will make that appeal to the outgoing cabinet on Thursday. “Education is not an on and off switch. No flashing light”, the occasion alliance writes in a press release. “It’s an essential part of growing up.” The call is supported by, among others, the Dutch GGZ, Defense for Children, Youth Care Netherlands, Save the Children and Safe at Home.
In mid-December, outgoing minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health, CDA) and Prime Minister Mark Rutte (VVD) announced at a press conference that the schools had to close for the third time in two years. The closure, a week before the start of the Christmas holidays, was “a defeat”, said outgoing minister Arie Slob (Primary and Secondary Education, ChristenUnie). Next Monday, the cabinet will decide when schools can open again.
The current policy makes children responsible for the health of adults, the director of Unicef Netherlands Suzanne Laszlo writes in the appeal placed on Thursday. According to her, it is not clear to what extent schools contribute to the infection rates and the pressure on healthcare, while “study after study” would show how harmful school closures are for children. The participating organizations call on the government to adopt an alternative policy for protecting vulnerable people in society.
The school closure was advised by the Outbreak Management Team (OMT). Christmas Day and Boxing Day fell this year in the first days of the Christmas holidays and the advisory body feared that children would pass the infection they contracted at school to their grandparents. This results in too much pressure on healthcare.
