Scrutinizing the intimacies hidden in the glass-walled mansions built in exclusive developments is one of the dark pleasures that has been drawing the most fiction in recent times. From Billions to Succession, the dirty laundry and the job and emotional failures of the rich and successful are an inexhaustible source of delight for the spectators. How did Big Little Lies with the dramas that the women of Monterrey hid behind the transparent walls of their luxurious residences, Unexpected suspects (Filmin) also delves into the dark side of the privileged and the unexpected sisterhood that arises from despair.
The Australian series uses social satire to develop a kind of Ocean’s Eight chaotic in the tone of a dramatic black comedy starring a group of Sydney high society women and their Filipino domestic workers. In the case of the wealthy, a facade of success and happiness hides personal and professional crises in lives that are beyond their control. His employees try to make life easier for their bosses while carrying (and hiding) their own family dramas.
The action begins with the theft of a very valuable necklace at the party that takes place in one of those mansions, to then narrate the planning and execution of that theft and its consequences. The four chapters of the series go from less to more. It is hard for him to find his tone, the beginning in media res it leaves the viewer dislodged and the series takes a while to place the tiles and for the story to start. But after the initial bump, the plot picks up pace and does not let go. It’s easy to connect with the characters, each with their own reasons for joining a conspiracy that, despite the enthusiastic minds behind it, feels chaotic. And so it is. Since employers come together with the intention of striking, everything flows much better in the series, with a light humor and a crazy action, almost crazy, that makes its second half a constant succession of funny nonsense and entertaining twists .
At the head of the cast is a Miranda Otto (Lord of the Rings, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Homeland) unleashed and giving everything as the influencer and entrepreneur whose alliance with her nanny (played by Filipino-American actress Aina Dumlao) will be the starting point of the crazy criminal plot. Unexpected suspects It has no more pretensions than the highly praiseworthy —and not at all simple— challenge of entertaining and making the viewer have a good time, and it succeeds. A very worthy hobby that can be a good option for a weekend marathon.
