The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced that it will grant its “UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize” to Palestinian journalists in Gaza, who have been covering the war that has been going on for nearly 7 months.
The organization said that granting journalists covering the Gaza Strip the “UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize” for the year 2024 was based on the recommendation of an international jury composed of professionals working in the field of media.
On the other hand, the United Nations revealed yesterday that 70 percent of environmental journalists were attacked because of their work.
This came in a new report published by UNESCO entitled “Journalism and the Planet in Danger” in conjunction with World Press Freedom Day, which falls on May 3 of each year. UNESCO warned of increasing violence against and intimidation of journalists covering environmental and climate issues.
The report revealed that at least 749 journalists and news media outlets covering environmental issues were targeted with murder, physical violence, detention, arrest, and online harassment in the period 2009-2023, indicating a significant increase in misinformation online during this period.
