According to some experts, understeer can be considered less pleasant than oversteer. Understeer is an automotive technical term that indicates a dynamic behavior of the car, which occurs when the car tends to travel a wider trajectory than that set by the driver as seen in the opening photo of caradvice.
Causes of understeer
The causes of understeer can be different and to shorten it we can say that it can be caused primarily by a higher speed with which you are facing a curve or by unfavorable conditions such as reduced grip between the road and tires.
Understeer, what is it?
The term understeer, as opposed to the oversteer, indicates the defect of a car that in curve does not respond as it should at the steering wheel, widening outwards. This condition mainly affects cars front-wheel drive but it is not excluded even in those with rear-wheel drive especially in case of speeding.
What happens in the front axle, the front tires will slide on the surface of the road while the rear ones will continue to have grip. The car is therefore unbalanced due to this imbalance between the two axles.
What causes understeer?
The main causes of understeer they are linked to the way you drive, the characteristics of the car and the conditions of the asphalt or terrain. Among the main causes: entering corners too fast and accelerating excessively when cornering but also a set-up configuration that is not the best, such as tires with too low pressure. Among the “natural” causes are unfavorable ground conditions with reduced grip as in the case of snowy, icy road, wet or slippery.
Understeer and front-wheel drive cars
The problem of understeer it is very common among motorists and occurs more frequently on cars a front-wheel drive , the most widespread and cheapest. With this type of “all forward” drive, the transfer of torque from the wheels is concentrated on the two front wheels which are also the two steering wheels and therefore more stressed with the possibility of losing grip more easily.
What to do in case of understeer?
As in the case of the oversteer, the first forethought is keep calm. With understeer you have to take your foot off the accelerator in order to favor adherence to the two front tires and to keep them in the established trajectory.
The situation is different if the ground is icy or slippery. In these cases, the steering wheel must be turned slightly in the direction in which the vehicle is skidding.
How to notice understeer?
How to notice understeer? According to a great rally driver, multiple champion, like Walter Rohrl: “Understeer is when you see the tree you hit.”
