This Wednesday, the Senate’s Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) sat down for a vacancy on the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and former attorney general of the Union and former minister of Justice and Public Security. Mendonça is the “terribly evangelical” minister appointed by President Jair Bolsonaro (no party), but there is no unanimity among his religious peers.
According to Monica Bergamo’s column in Folha de São Paulo, a front of progressive evangelicals launched a letter against Mendonça’s nomination to the STF. They argue that the appointment of the Presbyterian pastor “presents a clear and unequivocal platform whose type of religious engagement puts at risk countless achievements of Brazilian citizenship”.

“There is no doubt that the possible institutional decisions of the postulant, biased by confessional, theological and moral agreements hidden from democratic reason, may lead to an important setback to the civil rights and secular values guaranteed in the Constitution”, indicates the letter, noting that Mendonça, while ex-AGU, he defended the holding of religious services during the pandemic caused by Covid-19.
At the time, Mendonça said that Christians “are always willing to die to guarantee freedom of religion.”
The letter also states that “Mendonça represents only a small portion of the evangelical field in Brazil. A portion that is not representative from the point of view of the diversity and plurality of evangelicals from all over Brazil, which, according to IBGE data, is mostly black, female and poor — very distinct characteristics of the candidate”.
government support
Mendonça was nominated for the vacancy left by former minister Marco Aurélio Mello, who retired in July. Since August, when the nomination reached the Senate, the president of the CCJ, Davi Alcolumbre (DEM-AP), held the nomination made official by the rapporteur and senator Eliziane Gama (Cidadania-MA) due to political differences with the federal government.
According to columnist Malu Gaspar of the O Globo newspaper, Bolsonaro offered, last Tuesday night (30) a dinner to more than 100 people, including ministers, parliamentarians and evangelical leaders aligned with the government, to honor and ask for votes for the indication of Mendonça to the STF. Religious congressmen have been campaigning for approval.
Bolsonaro would have said that the event served to show Planalto’s commitment to nominating Mendonça to the Supreme Court. The first lady, Michelle Bolsonaro, would have been moved and wept.
To be approved, Mendonça needs at least 14 votes from the 27 members of the CCJ. If approved, the nomination will be voted on in the plenary of the Senate, where the former justice minister needs at least 41 votes out of a total of 81 senators.
Mendonça collects controversies: the creation of a dossier on public servants identified as anti-fascists; opening of inquiries against Bolsonaro critics, which include journalists and related critics in the press.
Other points that marked Mendonça’s actions were the tough anti-abortion stance and the defense of the prison after being sentenced in the second instance. Mendonça was also against equating homophobia crimes with racism and defended that Christians can question “homosexuality” (sic). Mendonça was also against the use of medicinal cannabis. These points should be challenged by opposition senators on Saturday.
