The National Secondary Education Examination (Enem) began to be applied yesterday (21) to students across the country. It will continue next Sunday (28). Only after the end of the application will the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep) release the official feedback and the Questions Book. The forecast is for the disclosure to take place on December 1st.
Enem uses a correction system called item response theory (TRI), known as an anti-kick method. Even with the feedback in hand, it is not possible to know the final exam score. Detailed explanations of the calculation of the Enem score are available at Enem 2021 Participant Guide.
In the objective test of Enem, the grade is not calculated taking into account only the number of correct questions, but also the coherence of the participant’s answers to the set of questions that make up the test. TRI estimates the difficulty of the questions and assesses the participants’ knowledge. Thus, students with the same number of correct answers on the test may have different grades.
This Sunday (21), the students took the language, humanities and writing tests. Next Sunday, they will solve the natural science and math questions in five hours. With the exception of writing, all are objective, multiple-choice tests. Each with 45 questions.
At the time of correction, the TRI will take into account the consistency of the test, that is, it is expected that a student who gets very difficult questions right will also get the very easy ones right. If that doesn’t happen, the system can understand that it guessed at the question, and therefore it will score less on that question than candidates who have maintained some expected consistency.
Enem’s questions they are chosen from the National Bank of Items (BNI), a collection of questions that is often filled with new questions. Each question is tested in advance with a group of students and ranked according to difficulty. Because of this, it is possible to compose several Enem tests, with different themes, but with the same level of difficulty.
According to Inep, the TRI mathematical model used in Enem considers three parameters:
*Discrimination parameter: power of discrimination that each question has to differentiate participants who dominate from participants who do not master the skill assessed in that question.
*Difficulty parameter: associated with the difficulty of the skill assessed in the question, the higher its value, the more difficult the question. It is expressed on the same scale as proficiency. In a quality test, we must have questions of different levels of difficulty to properly assess participants at all levels of knowledge.
* Random hit parameter: in multiple-choice tests, a participant who does not master the skill assessed in a given test question may correctly answer an item due to the random hit. Thus, this parameter represents the probability of a participant getting the question right by not mastering the required skill.
Another characteristic of TRI is that it does not have a standard lower or upper bound between knowledge areas. This means that the proficiencies of the participants do not vary between zero and one thousand. The maximum and minimum values of each test will depend on the characteristics of the selected items. On the Enem, only the writing test has a maximum value (mi)l, as the correction process is different.
Enem gathers more than three million students across the country, both in print and digital versions. The exam selects students for public higher education vacancies, through the Unified Selection System (Sisu), for scholarships in private institutions, through the University for All Program (ProUni), and serves as a parameter for the Student Financing Fund (Fies). The results can also be used to enter Portuguese educational institutions that have an agreement with Inep.
To test their knowledge, students can access the Enem questions, a bank prepared by Brazil Communication Company (EBC), which brings together all the Enem questions from 2009 to 2020.
In the system, you can choose which areas of knowledge you want to study. The bank selects the questions at random. More information about Enem coverage by EBC are available on here.
