Created in 2005 to be a benchmark in the performance of companies for their commitment to sustainability and inducing the adoption of ESG practices, the B3 Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) assesses 34 companies in five dimensions: Human Capital, Corporate Governance and High Management, Business Model and Innovation, Social Capital, Environment and Climate. Present on the ISE for the 16th consecutive year, EDP won first place in the 2021 general ranking. With two decades of experience in Brazil, EDP is one of the largest private companies in the electricity sector operating in the entire value chain. In 2021, it confirmed its pioneering approach to environmental, social and governance issues by becoming the first company in the segment to create a Vice President of People and ESG.
“For us, we are proud to be ranked 1st in the most respected ESG index in the Brazilian capital market. In 2021, we presented our most ambitious investment plan to the market, which demonstrates a firm commitment to renewable energies and the ESG strategy”, said the CEO of EDP in Brazil, João Marques da Cruz. “We believe that, in this decade, companies will have a fundamental role in the control of Climate Change and EDP wants to lead this movement, in line with its global strategy of leading the energy transition, acting today to change tomorrow”, he said. In November, the EDP group had obtained recognition from S&P Dow Jones as the most sustainable company in the electricity sector in the world, among 103 evaluated. With the maximum score in eight indicators, it received the “Best in Class” distinction.
With more than 10,000 direct and outsourced employees in Brazil, the company has been expanding its inclusion actions, being one of the five companies listed on B3 with the largest female participation in its Board of Directors. Women have a 33% share in this administrative instance, triple the national average. The efforts also include initiatives such as the creation of the first Electricians School exclusively for Women and the first Electricians School for Trans People, in addition to the goal of filling, by 2022, 50% of all vacancies with people from currently underrepresented groups, such as women, black people, people with disabilities, LGBTQIAP+ and over 50 years of age.
