Economy not observed, sum of illegal and undeclared activities, in the year of the pre-covid ha recorded a decline of over 5 billion, equal to 2.6%, on 2018, confirming the trend in place since 2014. In 2019 it collected 203 billion euros, equal to 11.3% of GDP. The underground economy component amounts to just over 183 billion euros while that of illegal activities exceeds 19 billion. There are 3 million 586 thousand irregular work units in 2019, down by over 57 thousand compared to the previous year.
In detail, explains Istat, in 2019 the added value generated by the economy was not observeda, or the sum of the underground economy and illegal activities, it amounted to 202.9 billion euros, with a decrease of 2.6% compared to the previous year (when it was 208.2 billion euro) in contrast to the trend in value added, which grew by 1.3%. The incidence of the unobserved economy on GDP consequently decreased by 0.5 percentage points, reaching 11.3% from 11.8% in 2018.
Almost all components of the unobserved economy showed a contractione: the hidden value added by under-declaration decreased by 3.8 billion euros compared to 2018, that generated by the use of irregular work by 1.2 billion, while the other components recorded a reduction of 0.5 billion . The illegal economy, on the other hand, recorded an increase, albeit very limited, compared to the previous year (+174 million).
