A former policeman on Thursday killed 34 people, including 22 children, when he opened fire at a daycare center in the northeastern Thai city of Uthai Sawan, according to local police.
According to the corporation’s last statement about the crime that took place around noon local time (2:00 GMT), there were still 15 wounded, eight of them in serious condition.
The one named by the authorities as responsible for the massacre is a 34-year-old man who was removed from the police for possession of drugs. He also killed his wife and son. After the attack, he committed suicide.
“We confirm that the criminal shot himself and died”, indicates a statement released by police on Facebook, which also indicates that the man still killed his wife and child after returning home.
The man accused of carrying out the massacre shot an automatic rifle at someone who was in a day care center in Nongbua Lamphu province, which usually receives children aged two to five years.
Images released by the local police show dozens of bodies in different parts of the educational institution.
Most of the wounded were sent to the Nong Bua Lamphu hospital, which “urgently” asked citizens to donate blood of all kinds, according to local media.
The country’s prime minister, Prayut Chan-ocha, expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
This is the second recent shooting involving police in Thailand. Last month, an active-duty officer killed two colleagues and wounded another at the Army Training Command’s War School in Bangkok.
