A post celebrating 10 years of Uncharted 3 also talks about the problems during development.
Ten years ago, Sony Interactive Entertainment launched the action adventure Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. For the 10th anniversary, Naughty Dog has published an article in which several developers of the studio answer questions about the game.
Among other things, Vice President Christian Gyrling told an interesting story of the development. Serious bugs emerged a few days before delivery to Sony, which was a great challenge for the team. “The game was almost over. We had sent most of the team home to play as it was only a few days away from delivering the final build to Sony for production. I took the game home on my own and started playing it from the start. After a few hours of play, the game started to flicker. Mistakes got worse and worse until the enemies went invisible, the ocean turned blood red, and the levels were completely absent“.
Gyrling lost his nerve and stormed President Evan Wells’ office the next morning. “We cannot deliver the game like this“, he said in a panic. He then made a guess as to why the serious errors occurred after a few hours of play. By discussing the problems with the main developers the VP was able to find some sort of solution. to do this, however, it was necessary to ensure that this measure actually led to the solution of the problems.
To test the proposed solution, Gyrling proceeded as follows: “I made 2 versions of the game. One was the buggy version of the game, but with the debug text displayed on the screen. The second version was the “fixed” version, which also showed bug fixes on the screen. If our guess was correct, we could have seen it from the numbers that would have appeared on the screen for both versions“.
Two QA employees tested the two versions. His hypothesis was confirmed. In the correct version, the malfunction did not actually occur. Just two days later, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception was sent to Sony to begin production.
Also in the post, the director of Uncharted 3 explained the birth of the iconic scene on the plane.
