The union leader warns that “to say that the labor reform is in an initial negotiation phase is to lose respect for the social dialogue table”
The current Secretary General of the Workers’ Commissions (CCOO), Unai Sordo, has achieved this Saturday, at the 12th Confederal Congress, reelection for his second term as head of the union for the next four years with 659 votes in favor and 44 abstentions, which that supposes a support of 93.74%, above the 88.8% that it obtained in the previous Congress. The new executive had 661 votes in favor and 49 abstentions. The support of the union delegates has been 93.09%.
During his closing speech, and with the Vice President and Minister of Labor Yolanda Díaz present at the event, Sordo has not avoided the controversy of recent days, given the differences that the Minister of Economy, Nadia Calviño, and Díaz herself, have put on the table in order to tackle the labor reform. “What cannot be said is that the labor reform is in an initial negotiation phase. That is losing respect for the social dialogue table, “he warned those attending the Congress.
Sordo has also explained that the unions have been talking to the Government about labor reform since the beginning of the legislature. “In February, the work to repeal the part that has to do with collective bargaining was well advanced. The pandemic arrived and the agenda changed, ”he explained, recalling that in the previous legislature, with Magdalena Valerio at the head of Labor, the work to repeal the same points of the reform was also well advanced. «The text was written. There was an electroal advance and that went to hell. But it cannot be seriously argued that this negotiation is in the preliminary phase, “he insists.
The tension of the last days between the members of the Government has also forced Sordo to ask the Government to put an end to the “story struggles between political leaders”, warning that everything that is happening with the differences within the Executive ” It angers people who do not make ends meet and they are put in a position to endorse policies that are contrary to their objective interests.
In the same way, he has warned that both his union and the General Union of Workers (UGT) are willing to go to a process of mobilizations if the reforms in which they are working are blocked, alluding to the friction in the Government by the labour reform.
Under this premise, Sordo has asked the parties that make up the Government (PSOE and Unidas Podemos) “to be aware of the importance of what is at stake” after the pandemic. «There is no room for frivolity. We need governments of progress and seriousness when it comes to managing things that happen, so be careful not to play with fire and forget the experience of the electoral advance and the irruption of the extreme right for being silly ».
Since training, they have also demanded “high-mindedness” in the political, economic and social world, warning that the process of digital and energy transition, although necessary, cannot be accompanied by massive job losses or precariousness. confirmed by the population.
Sordo has stressed that he has “all the will to dialogue” with the Government and the employers, but also “all the determination” to enforce the Executive’s commitments to the country. “We are not going to allow the negotiations that we have been holding so far to remain in borage water,” he stressed during his speech.
The speech ended with a strong wave of applause among the attendees, who have endorsed by an absolute majority that Unai Sordo leads the union for the next four years. It should be remembered that in CC OOO the General Secretariat is limited to a maximum of three terms (two ordinary and one extraordinary) lasting four years each.
