The UN Secretary General also called for respect for civilians in that country.

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, assured this Friday that the “protection of civilians (in Ukraine) must be the number one priority.

In a message on his twitter account, Guterres confirmed “the increase in the number of deaths” in the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory, which makes us see “images of fear, anguish and terror in all corners of Ukraine.”(Due to the public interest that the events between Russia and Ukraine arouse, all our coverage of that invasion and related actions will have free access for all readers of EL TIEMPO)

Thus “the protection of civilians must be the number one priority. International human rights and humanitarian law must be respected“, stressed the head of the UN.

Guterres announced this Thursday the immediate sending of 20 million dollars as emergency aid for the civilian population affected by the fighting in Ukraine.

In a brief statement at the UN headquarters, Guterres specified that this first aid, coming from the UN Emergency Fund, will be delivered “regardless of who they are or where they are.”

The official stated that UN personnel “work on both sides of the line of contact, always guided by the humanitarian principles of neutrality, impartiality, humanity and independence.”
