Geneva – The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has called on the participants of the world climate conference COP26 in Glasgow to take concrete action. “It is time to leave empty speeches, unfulfilled promises and unfulfilled promises behind us,” she said three days before the start of the conference on Thursday in Geneva. “We need laws that are passed, programs that are implemented and investments that are quickly and comprehensively funded – all without further delays.”
This is the only way to avert natural and environmental disasters or at least to mitigate the consequences. Above all, help must be given to those who are most affected by the consequences of climate change, often poor and marginalized people. “This is a human rights obligation,” said Bachelet.
The UN Human Rights Council first adopted a resolution in September that recognizes life in a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a human right. This has no concrete consequences at first, but environmental groups and activists can refer to it if they demand climate and environmental protection measures from their governments. (dpa)
