A group of 45 countries that are members of the United Nations signed a declaration on Tuesday (10) calling for an end to violence and persecution against the political opposition and the people of Venezuela.
The signatories addressed the Human Rights Council against Nicolás Maduro’s dictatorship, in order to pressure Chavismo to “end the wave of repression against political opponents and protesters that is intensifying throughout the country.” They also called for the unconditional and immediate release of those arbitrarily detained.
The statement, read at the UN by Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino, directly called on Venezuelan authorities to respect, without restrictions, “international standards on due process and conditions of detention.”
The document has been signed by several Latin American countries, including Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Panama, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay. The United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Australia and members of the European Union – Spain, Portugal, Italy, France and Germany – also support the request against the post-electoral situation in Venezuela.
