BELGRADE (Reuters) – Developing countries and the head of the United Nations on Monday called for fairer global distribution of Covid-19 vaccines and more funding from rich countries to help the poorest adapt to a world in heating.
At a meeting marking the 60th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Countries Movement, its founding member, Ghana, attacked global powers for not sharing vaccines equitably, suggesting that poor countries are at the mercy of powerful states that stockpile inputs.
“We are observers of a global power game and we are subject to the benevolence of powerful countries that distribute their accumulated (vaccine) supplies at their own pace,” Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo said during the meeting in Belgrade.
UN Secretary General António Guterres has asked rich nations to allocate half of the funds provided to developing countries to combat climate change in the mission to help these states adapt and survive in a warming world.
“Fifty percent of all climate finance provided by developed countries and multilateral development banks must be dedicated to adaptation, to resilience,” Guterres said in a video message at the opening of the meeting, which is expected to last two days.
He also asked the G20 to do more to help vaccinate the planet against the new coronavirus.
