In a period of war it is normal for industrial production to suffer consequences. But given the global ramification of trade and supplies, even countries formally out of the conflict see their industries slow down or stop. War between Russia and Ukraineunfortunately still in progress, is putting various car manufacturers in difficulty, bringing to light new problems for the sector after the crises linked to Covid and the shortage of semiconductors.
In recent days we have already talked about the present and potential problems for the Renault group, which has the Russian brand Lada among its ranks, and for Skoda, a brand that has important production plants in Russia and Ukraine. But now, with the sanctions imposed on Russia by the whole Western world, new industrial headaches will arise for all the big builders. Volkswagen and Volvo are also added to the list of manufacturers that have had to take important measures.
In Wolfsburg the biggest problem is for components. For example, there are no electric cables, which should come from Ukraine. The Zwickau and Dresden plants will see production suspended for several days, with recourse to layoffs. Consequently, even Audi and Cupra will not see the production of their electric cars Q4 e-tron and Born for a few days. Volkswagen will forgo the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5 until further notice.
Volkswagen itself and Volvo have fully adhered to the sanctions blocking all vehicle deliveries to dealerships in Russia. And it is extremely likely that other car manufacturers will do the same. As for Stellantis, official news is expected relating to the suspension of its activities in Russia. Daimler Truck also stopped its business in Russia with immediate effect, including its collaboration with the Russian brand Kamaz in the block of operations.
If the war lasts long with this intensity, the chances of regaining the lost ground will be infinitely small.
