Yuriy Vernydub is the technical director of Sheriff Tiraspol, a Moldovan first division team. He left the courts to defend his countryUkraine, after the armed conflict with Russia.
He did not hesitate for a moment in dressing up in a military suit and getting ready to serve in his country’s army. In fact, as soon as the assault by Russian troops in Eastern Europe became known, he expressed his support for Ukraine at a press conference.(Due to the public interest that the events between Russia and Ukraine arouse, all our coverage of that invasion and related actions will have free access for all readers of EL TIEMPO)
I am proud of the people who are defending, I am not afraid for their strength and health
“If you need my help, I will always be there (…) I was born in Ukraine, I live in Ukraine and I want to give a few words of support to the Ukrainians, who suffered from the Russian attack,” he said last week at a press conference after a football match.
He did not miss the opportunity before the microphones of the media to reaffirm his feeling of being Ukrainian.

“I am proud of the people who are defending, I am not afraid for their strength and health, they give people the possibility to sleep in peace,” said Vernydub, who is 56 years old.
On the morning of this Monday, an image of the director was known next to two other men. All wearing military dress and smiling at the camera. Through the image it was confirmed that he had enlisted in the forces. At the moment no more is known about his condition.

The coach’s name is remembered because in September 2021 his team defeated, in a game for many unexpected, the Real Madrid. The scoreboard was 2-1 in the middle of the Santiago Bernabéu and in the middle of the Champions League.
Sheriff Tiraspol, a 19-time champion of the Moldovan National Division, has not commented on the departure and enlistment of his coach.
Meanwhile, the start of talks between the governments of Ukraine and Russia have so far begun, but no concrete progress has been reported, so the conflict continues and Yuriy Vernydub is likely to face the so-called invaders.
