They fled the war and found refuge thousands of kilometers away
They traveled thousands of kilometers aboard special planes to escape the war and leave their home in Ukraine, battered since late February 2022 due to the invasion of Moscow by Russian troops, heartbroken. I’m Ukrainian refugees together with their pets who have found refuge in the distant past Canada.
In early May 2022, a flight with 166 Ukrainian refugees arrived at St. John’s International Airport in Canada. Together with them there were also 11 pets, 3 dogs and 8 cats. Their owners couldn’t leave them under the bombs, so they had to wait to catch a plane certain they could take them with them.
TO Newfoundland and Labrador, a province in the easternmost part of Canada, Ukrainian citizens fleeing the gombe with their pets have found a warm welcome. And other pet owners who have stayed home because they can’t escape with their pets hope to join them soon.
The stories of Ukrainian refugees and their pets who arrived in Canada
Fortunately, there are many stories with a happy ending that we want to tell you. Hanna Sukhinets traveled with Margohis cat, and Goddess, his medium-sized dog. To escape her city, he had to take a train, a bus, and then a plane. Husband and her oldest dog are still in Ukraine. To welcome the woman Lori Best, who was moved by reading her story about her.
Two cats named Bella and Simba also traveled on the same plane flight, along with the owners Olga and Ivan Antoniuk. The couple had a real estate company in Ukraine. Bella is 13 years old and had never left her home: it was not easy traveling with her.
All the refugees, upon their arrival at the airport, were greeted by the host families, who continue to open the doors of their homes to Ukrainians and pets fleeing the war, also helping them to take flights. There is even a Facebook group to organize these journeys of hope. Hoping that one day they can return to their land, without more bombs.
