A large-scale hack brought down several government websites in Ukraine on Thursday evening. This was reported by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, according to international news agencies. It is too early to draw any conclusions about who is responsible for the hack, the department spokesman said, “but Ukraine has a long history of attacks from Russia”.
The websites of, among others, the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education and Emergencies were not accessible on Friday morning. Prior to the hack, the perpetrators posted an ominous message on one of these sites in Ukrainian, Russian and Polish. “Ukrainians, be afraid and prepare for the worst. All your personal information has been uploaded to the web.” This message was accompanied by several logos, including a crossed-out Ukrainian flag. The Ukrainian government denies the contents of the message, stating that no personal data was leaked.
The cyber attack comes amid mounting tensions between Ukraine and neighboring Russia. Kiev and the West fear that Moscow is preparing to invade Ukraine, something the Kremlin vehemently denies. In recent days, delegations from Russia, NATO and the United States have sat around the table several times to calm people’s minds, but so far without result.
