The policy of the German authorities towards Russia has failed, said the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnik.
“We proceed from the fact that all voiced during the election campaign [в Германии] statements in favor of a new tough course towards Moscow will not be forgotten, but translated into concrete action. Berlin’s previous policy of appeasement towards Russia failed. We hope that the future government of the Federal Republic of Germany will correct past mistakes in a too compliant, almost naive treatment. [c Россией]”, – he pointed out in an interview with the newspaper Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.
Melnik is convinced that Russia allegedly intends to blackmail Germany and other partners in order to accelerate the certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, deliberately creating a situation with a shortage of gas. However, the German government rejects a direct link between the sharp rise in gas prices and the “destructive policy of the Kremlin.”
“We do not share this assessment,” the ambassador stressed.
“Ukraine calls on the future government of the Federal Republic of Germany to recognize the [будущем] the coalition agreement “Nord Stream – 2” a huge threat from the point of view of security policy and freeze the project “, – leads TASS Miller’s words.
On October 6, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, said that Kiev needed a clear international legal mechanism that could guarantee the country’s security against the backdrop of the upcoming launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
A day earlier, German MEP Gunnar Beck told Izvestia that there is no alternative to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline for Germany and should not be. The politician asked why the project should be called into question, since Russia has an “exemplary track record” in fulfilling its obligations under international trade agreements. Russia is one of the most reliable trading partners in the world, he noted.
On September 16, the Ukrainian leader signed an order to create a working group to neutralize the risks from the launch of SP-2. The document notes that the construction of the SP-2 contains “direct threats to the national security of the country and the security of the entire region.”
The construction of the gas pipeline was completed on September 10. Nord Stream 2 was built from Russia to Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic states, Poland, the USA and Ukraine are opposed.
