“Unfortunately today China is working to prevent countries from participating in the peace summit“. This is what Volodymir Zelensky said, speaking on the sidelines of the security conference in Singapore, referring to at the summit which will take place on 15 and 16 June in Switzerland. In his previous speech, again on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue conference, the Ukrainian president had said that there are countries that are trying to hinder the conference without mentioning China. In recent days Beijing, which has presented its own plan for peace in Ukraine, said that it does not believe that the conference has accepted its conditions.
“Russia is trying to hinder the peace summit, this is true – he said – it is going to many countries around the world threatening to block agricultural, food and chemical exports, it is putting pressure on countries not to participate in the summit”. And to a question about China’s lack of participation he replied: “It is sad that such a great and independent power as China is an instrument in the hands of Putin”.
“With China’s support for Russia the war will be longer: this is bad for the world and for the policy of China, which officially claims to support territorial integrity and sovereignty.” Echoing the accusations that Washington has long made against Beijing, that is, of sending dual-use materials to Russia that effectively support the Russian military industry, the Ukrainian president said that some components of Russian weapons “come from China”.
“We appreciate the vital military and political support to Ukraine from the United States,” Zelensky said, expressing Kiev’s gratitude for the US administration’s decision to allow use American weapons for limited attacks on Russian territory to counter Moscow’s attempts to expand the fighting zone, according to a note from the Ukrainian government.
“We are very grateful to President Joe Biden and his administration for their constant help in the fight for our freedom and independence,” Zelensky said. For his part, Austin reiterated that “the support of the United States for Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression will never fail”, we read on X, where the head of the Pentagon also underlined Washington’s commitment to maintaining the coalition of over 50 countries that are helping Kiev.
In the meeting, we talked about the needs of Ukrainian defense, in particular the strengthening of air defenses – “this is now the most important thing to defend the lives of Ukrainians, our cities and civil infrastructure”, concludes Zelensky – and the efforts to speed up the delivery of the F-16s promised by the coalition to Kiev.
