The construction of the Nord Stream 2 (SP-2) gas pipeline may still be stopped, but the emergence of new similar projects from Russia is not excluded. This opinion was expressed by the deputy head of the office of the President of Ukraine Igor Zhovkva.
“Nord Stream 2” still has a chance of being stopped. It is an exaggeration to say that it is almost ready. It can be stopped at any stage, ”he said in an interview with the Ukrainian Telegraph newspaper on July 10.
Zhovka also recalled the position of the Kiev authorities regarding the fact that the construction of the gas pipeline threatens not only Ukraine, but also all countries that may become “dependent on Russian gas.”
Thus, in his words, Nord Stream 2 should be taken more seriously. “It is possible that this project will be followed by new projects,” Zhovkva suggested.
On July 9, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal, at a briefing with the Prime Minister of Lithuania Ingrida Shimonyte, doubted that the SP-2 would be completed. The head of the Ukrainian government stressed that his country will suffer from the construction of the gas pipeline, “as the volumes of gas transit will significantly decrease.” However, according to Shmygal, we are talking not only about a separate state, but also about the alleged threat to security and the growing influence of Russia in Europe.
Waldemar Gerdt, a member of the Bundestag Committee on International Affairs, replied that in Ukraine, as much as they want to doubt the completion of the gas pipeline, nothing will change from their “whine”.
Nord Stream 2 is being built from Russia to Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic states, Poland, the USA and Ukraine are opposed. On June 4, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the completion of the laying of the first string of Nord Stream 2. The second can be completed in one and a half to two months.
