Massive explosions were heard around 4 a.m. local time. Footage posted to Twitter showed two explosions lighting up the night sky. The NBC broadcaster witnessed one of the heaviest explosions to date. “What the hell was that?” the irritated reporter asked as a very bright explosion happened behind him. A second bright flash followed immediately, followed by a loud explosion. The NBC team then fled to safety.

Due to the heavy explosions, the residents of Kiev were called upon to seek shelter immediately. At first it was unclear whether it was an air raid and what the goals could have been.

The mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, wrote on the Telegram news channel: “The situation is complicated.” Several explosions could be heard in Kyiv. “Several cars caught fire.” A police station was also damaged.
