Ukrainian forces maintain control of Kharkiv, the country’s second largest city (located in the northeast), Governor Oleg Sinegoubov said, hours after announcing an advance by Russian troops and clashes in the streets. The information is from Agence France-Presse.
On his Facebook account, Sinegoubov warned of an “incursion by Russian enemy light vehicles into the city of Kharkiv, including the central part”. The fighting started this Sunday morning (27), in different parts of the city. “Don’t leave your shelters!”, he directed the civilians, through the social network, according to CNN.
With 1.4 million inhabitants, Kharkiv is the second most important municipality in Ukraine and is located about 400 kilometers east of the capital. According to local authorities, despite bombings recorded tonight, Kiev remains under the control of Ukrainian forces.
The Russian onslaught against civilians has motivated Ukraine to file a case against Russia at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the UN’s highest court, based in The Hague, Netherlands, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday.
The Ukrainian leader declared that “what the invaders are doing in Kharkiv, Okhtyrka, Kiev, Odessa and other cities and towns deserves to be tried by an international court”. The latest figures from the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) show that 368,000 people have fled the country since the beginning of the war.
