World.- Faced with the dramatic escalation of tensions between Russia and Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the “immediate accession” from country to European Union and called for this process to be accelerated because it is usually slow.
This was mentioned by the Ukrainian president during a message from the Supreme Network which was broadcast via Telegram.
“We call on the European Union for the immediate accession of Ukraine under a new special procedure,” Zelenski said in a video message to the population.
On behalf of the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenhas stated that Ukraine is one of us and we want it with us” in the EU, however, he did not specify how long the process of joining the bloc would take.
In the same way, Joseph Borrell who is the foreign policy representative of the EU mentioned that the accession of Ukraine is not an issue that is currently on the agenda and pointed out that this process takes years, since he considered that now a response is being sought in order to stop the attacks Russians.
On the other hand, the European Council, Charles Michel, assured this Monday that there is a divergence of opinions between the different member countries on the entry of Ukraine: “There are different opinions and caution within the EU about enlargement.”
Although there is still no estimated time for the accession to be completed, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request was welcomed by the member countries of the European Union, which did not take long to pronounce themselves in favor of Ukraine’s entry.
