Ukraine reopens train line between kyiv and Kherson after Russian withdrawal

Ukraine announced on Friday the reopening of the train line between the capital kyiv and Kherson, a week after the withdrawal of the Russian army from this important city in the south of the country.

“The first trip will take place today (Friday) at 22:14 (20:14 GMT) from the capital, arriving tomorrow around 09:00 (07:00 GMT) in Kherson,” a local official, Sergei Khlan, said on Facebook, noting that “about 200 passengers (…) will travel on board” the train.

Since the withdrawal of Russian troops from Kherson a week ago, kyiv has denounced “atrocities”, including numerous cases of torture, committed by the Russian army during its eight-month occupation.

According to the deputy head of the Ukrainian presidency, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, who visited the region, “the Russians not only killed, mined, but also robbed our cities,” he denounced. “There’s nothing left!” he added.

The Ukrainian railway company announced on Friday the reopening of the train line between the capital kyiv and this strategic city in the south of the country.

The reopening of the line is symbolic for nowsince tickets for the next few days have not yet been put on sale.

“For now it will be a single train. Then we will see if it becomes a regular line” on the Ukrainian railway network, a spokeswoman for the railway company told AFP.
