Ukraine’s parliament on Sunday passed two laws to impose restrictions on cultural products from Russia, which invaded the country on February 24.
According to information from Reuters, one of the laws stipulates that the printing of books by Russian citizens is prohibited, unless they renounce their citizenship of the country presided over by Vladimir Putin and assume the Ukrainian one. The restriction will apply to those who retained Russian citizenship after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Also according to the agency, the article will also ban the commercial import of printed books in Russia, Belarus and Moscow-occupied Ukrainian territories, such as Crimea, in addition to requiring special permission for the import of books in Russian from any other country.
The other law will prohibit the broadcasting of songs written or performed by citizens who retained Russian citizenship after 1991 in the media and public transport and will increase the quotas for content in Ukrainian on TV and radio. The laws were forwarded for sanction by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Ukraine’s Minister of Culture, Oleksandr Tkachenko, said in a publication on a government website that the Ukrainian public, “after the Russian invasion, does not accept [mais] no Russian creative product on a physical level.”
