Ukraine is offering Gazprom a 50% discount on transit gas supplies to Europe in excess of the 40 billion cubic meters per year established by the contract, said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. His words convey TASS…
At the same time, the head of the Ukrainian state emphasized that opportunities are offered to all countries that can potentially pump gas through the country. “We would like to see European companies as clients, but these additional opportunities are available to Gazprom as well. Taking into account the current transit tariff, the discount will be, I suppose, 50 percent, ”he said.
Ukraine expects to increase gas transit through its territory. At the beginning of October, the head of the Ukrainian GTS Operator, Serhiy Makogon, proposed pumping an additional 80 million cubic meters of gas a day to the European Union. “Billions of euros went to the bottom of the Baltic Sea in the form of the Nord Stream project, while the routes through Ukraine and Poland are half empty on the eve of the heating season and amid the pan-European gas crisis,” he said, pointing out that Gazprom is now using fewer contracted capacities.
At the same time, the Ukrainian side accuses Gazprom of blackmailing Europe. In mid-October, Makogon argued that the volume of gas not supplied to the EU countries could exceed five billion cubic meters by the end of the 2021-2022 heating season, if Gazprom does not book additional capacities of the Ukrainian gas transportation system. Before that, the Russian company refused to supply more gas through Ukraine: the country offered to book “firm” supplies of 9.8 million cubic meters per day for November, Gazprom preferred to keep the volume specified in the contract.
