North Korea recognized, like Russia last February 21 and Syria in June, the independence of the People’s Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk and intends to establish diplomatic relations with both. Foreign Minister Choe Sun Hui wrote to the leaders of both regions, the official media said. The news was confirmed by the pro-Russian leader of the Republic of Donetsk, Denis Pushilin.
“The international status of the Donetsk People’s Republic and its statehood continues to strengthen. It is another diplomatic victory for us”, added Pushilin, thanking Pyongyang for the support of the population. “This political decision lays the foundations for the future development of economic relations. The bilateral partnership will make it possible for our companies to expand their business relations,” she stressed.
South Ossetia recognized the independence of the two Ukrainian regions in 2014 and so did Abkhazia last February. The Kremlin states that it has welcomed Pyongyang’s recognition of the independence of the two republics. North Korea is not among the few countries that have recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
