Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) praises the continued willingness to help refugees from Ukraine. “I am grateful these days to be the foreign minister of a country that has opened its living rooms, its schools, its factories and its hospitals to over 465,000 women and 350,000 children from Ukraine,” she said in an interview with the “Kölnische Rundschau” ( Friday).
For her, that was “Europe’s homeland” and “not ‘just’ solidarity,” added Baerbock. Because it is “in our own security interest” to oppose the war together in Europe and in Germany, “instead of being divided by Putin: even if that – there is no need to get around it – is a huge challenge.”
When asked about a rising number of people coming via the Balkan route, the minister said: “The fact that many Afghans are fleeing to Europe is because the Taliban have brutally taken control of the country and are making it impossible for women to live their lives, go to school or work.” The war in Syria is also causing many people to flee, added Baerbock: “They all have only one wish – like us: that their children can live in safety.”
