War in Ukraine: “We hope that silence will last a long time”
While hostilities in Ukraine intensify and multiply everywhere, in Italy and in the world, demonstrations calling for the immediate cessation of hostilities, Save the Children today is broadcasting the dramatic audio testimony of Anna (the name is made up, to protect her identity), a 16-year-old girl who lives near the contact line.
Anna’s testimony: “We hide in basements, shelters or safe areas”
“The last few days have been very chaotic, especially on February 24th. We woke up at 5am due of shots and explosions, at the beginning we didn’t even understand if it was happening in our village or elsewhere “said Anna, who had previously been supported by Save the Children, the organization that has been fighting for over 100 years to save girls and boys at risk and guarantee them a future. “Within half an hour, we were informed that the bombing had begun in a nearby town. We were told that the inhabitants had been evacuated in a bomb shelter and that, for safety reasons, we too had to do the same: hide in basements, shelters or safe areas of the house, because there was a high probability that the bombing hit our village. This horror lasted from 5 to 9 in the morning, ”Anna continues. “At the moment our hope is that the silence will last as long as possible and that there are no more bombings ”, concludes the girl.
After Covid, the war: children are the first victims
Children and young people in Ukraine have already lived through eight years of conflict, and today they are faced with violence againthe bombing and the escape from their homes, what is happening is too serious. Every war is a war against them. Every effort must be made to find a diplomatic solution immediately and protect them from all this. Because of this Save the Children Italy joined the demonstration against the war for a Europe of Peace underway in Rome organized by the Italian Network for Peace and Disarmament. “It is absurd and unacceptable to witness the emergence of yet another conflict that will leave an indelible mark on the lives of many children, risking to kill many others. We participate in this demonstration to forcefully demand an immediate cessation of hostilities, because this is the only way to protect them from war and further violations of their rights. The escalation of violence and fighting, the use of explosive weapons, put the civilian population, schools and hospitals at risk, exposing children to very serious consequences for their life and safety. The parties to the conflict must also ensure maximum access to humanitarian aid so that they can reach them and their families who are in grave danger and living in extreme conditions. ” he has declared Daniela Fatarella, General Manager of Save the Children Italy.
