The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called on Turkmenistan to arrest Putin during his visit to the country
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Ukraine called on Turkmenistan to “arrest” Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Ashgabat. The corresponding statement was published on the department’s website.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called the Russian leader a “war criminal.” In the message, the department also recalled that in the spring of 2023, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin for “illegal forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia.”
We call on all countries that value human life, international law and the UN Charter to refrain from holding joint events with the participation of Putin
This call was made despite the fact that Turkmenistan has not signed the Rome Statute, which recognizes the jurisdiction of the ICC.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin arrived in Ashgabat. The head of state will take part in the international forum “The relationship of times and civilizations is the basis of peace and development.” The event is dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the birth of the Turkmen poet Magtymguly Fragi.
Ukraine announced a demarche in connection with Putin’s visit to Mongolia
Previously, the then-current Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba accused Mongolia of a “gross violation” of obligations due to its refusal to “arrest” Putin. He said that after the first reports of the Russian leader’s visit to Ulaanbaatar, Kyiv sent a “clear signal” to the Mongolian authorities, which was ignored. After this, Ukraine sent another signal when the visit had already begun, but there was no response to it either. Ukraine also announced a demarche in connection with Putin’s visit to Mongolia. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that the whole world is to blame for Mongolia’s refusal to arrest Putin.
The Rome Statute should work, but recently an exception was found in Mongolia for Putin. And this responsibility is not just someone specific, it is the responsibility of the whole world.
In turn, the representative of Mongolia explained why the country refused to “arrest” Vladimir Putin in accordance with the ICC warrant. He noted that Ulaanbaatar adheres to a policy of neutrality in all its diplomatic relations.
The Kremlin revealed the influence of the ICC warrant on Putin’s international contacts
According to presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov, the ICC order will not limit or affect Vladimir Putin’s contacts with countries that are interested in developing bilateral relations. According to him, the global majority has a “much broader” view of possible prospects for cooperation. Peskov also said that it was “difficult to even think about using the warrant against Putin.”
It is difficult to imagine that anyone would even seriously think about using this order against the President of the Russian Federation
Earlier, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the decisions of the ICC do not matter for Moscow, since Russia is not a party to the Rome Statute and does not recognize their decisions.
