Ukraine insists and brings the war to the territory of Russia. Kiev forces have made confirmed advances of up to 10 kilometers in Russia’s Kursk Oblastduring the ongoing mechanized offensive operations on the territory. This is the picture outlined by the Institute for the Study of War, an American think tank that monitors the conflict on a daily basis.
The analysis is based on the examination of geolocated footage released in the last 48 hours. According to the ISW, the videos show that Ukrainian armored vehicles have advanced to positions 10 kilometers from the border. The current confirmed extent and location of the Ukrainian advance in Kursk Oblast “indicate that Ukrainian forces have penetrated at least two Russian defensive lines and a stronghold. A Russian insider source said that Ukrainian forces have seized 45 square kilometers of territory inside Kursk Oblast since they launched the operation on August 6.”
Other Russian sources reported that Ukrainian forces captured 11 settlements in totalincluding Nikolaevo-Daryino (1.5 kilometers north of the border with Sumy Oblast), Darino (three kilometers north of the border with Sumy Oblast), and Sverdlikovo (east of the Nikolaevo-Darino-Darino area), and operate inside Lyubimovka (eight kilometers north of the border with Sumy Oblast). Videos posted on Telegram show civilians fleeing from the areas involved in the clashes: the evacuation reportedly involves hundreds of people.
Yesterday, the Russian president called the Ukrainian offensive “a provocation”. From Moscow, the Ministry of Defense initially denied the presence of Ukrainian soldiers and vehicles on Russian territory. Then, however, it admitted the border breach, providing information on the effective intervention of Russian forces.
