Ukraine has asked Pope Francis to discuss with Russian President Vladimir Putin about authorizing humanitarian corridors, as Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk declared.

The aim is to establish ways to help civilians hit by war. “I hope the conversation between them will take place,” Iryna declared on Ukrainian television.

An official statement from Ukraine said on Wednesday that more than 2,000 Ukrainian civilians had died in seven days of Russian offensive, and that, among the structures affected, there were kindergartens and hospitals. The number of civilians injured in the attacks has not yet been calculated.
